Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot. Updated X-Plane 11 scenery is available for Wyreema in OzXP and for other airports.

The sounds of crashing blue waves and the sight of luscious rainforests can only mean that this FIFO Friday has brought us to Far North Queensland and the region of Leichhardt. Being "where the rainforest meets the reef" as any local will tell you, this region has some of the best views in the country. Whether it be the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, the infamous Daintree Rainforest, or the mining hub of the Atherton Tablelands, this region definitely has a scenery to suit everyone. Here, FIFO flights focus on connecting the indigenous communities of Cape York to Cairns (YBCS). These flights are often the only connection to these towns, playing an important role in keeping a unique and ancient culture alive well into the future.
You too can bask in the wonders of Leichhardt by joining us between 0700z and 1000z (5pm-8pm AEST : 3pm-6pm AWST) for ATC coverage of the region. Regardless of your aircraft type, or experience level, we invite you to come take advantage of a fully staffed Cairns (YBCS), as well as enroute coverage from three different sectors encompassing the entire region. No matter where you fly, we hope you enjoy your time and we welcome you to Leichhardt this July!

Routes:
The below map highlights some of the most popular routes which can be flown in this region:

Other airports of note within this region include: Mareeba (YMBA), Coen (YCOE), and Lockhart River (YLHR)
With ATC covering the entire region, pilots are free to fly in whichever direction and between whichever airports they choose. For the more airport pairs, we recommend the following routings:
YBCS - YCKN:
CS W567 GUPDA
YBCS - YBWP:
CS B473 WP
YBCS - YHID:
CS R204 HID
YBCS - YPMP:
CS Z11 MASHA
YBCS - YKOW:
CS W281 KOW
YBCS - YNTN:
CS J64 NONUM W793 NTN
YBCS - YAUR:
CS Z42 NECTA
YBCS - YNPE:
CS W567 LHR

Special Procedures:
Leichhardt is home to a whole array of magnificent regional airfields for you to explore. Being too small for full control services, OCTA services will be provided by enroute controllers to assist you. Below is a guide to help you with these servies:
Departure:
Taxi Call:
The taxi call informs ATC of your intentions and that you are taxiing at your respective airfield. In response, centre will provide you with a traffic statement and a squawk code.
Example:
SKP71: "Brisbane Centre, IFR Dash 8, SKYTRANS 71 taxies runway 14 at Pormpuraaw for Cairns"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS78, no reported IFR traffic, squawk 4782"
SKP71: "Squawk 4782, SKYTRANS 71"
Departure Call:
Once you have departed, the departure call allows ATC to identify you and to provide you with your airways clearance to your destination.
Example:
SKP71: "Centre, SKYTRANS 71 departure"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 71, centre"
SKP71: "SKYTRANS 71 departed Pormpuraaw at time 49, tracking direct MASHA, passing 4500 for FL190, estimating MASHA at time :02"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 71, cleared to Cairns via MASHA flight planned route, climb FL190"
SKP71: "Cleared to Cairns via MASHA flight planned route, climbing to FL190, SKYTRANS 71"
Arrival:
Descent:
As you approach your destination, the centre controller will advise you that you are cleared to leave controlled airspace on your descent. They will provide you with a clearance, traffic statement, and the local QNH.
Example:
BN-ARA_CTR: SKYRANS 53, leave control area descending, no reported IFR traffic, area QNH 1015"
Termination of SARWATCH:
Once you have arrived at your destination, inform centre that you have landed and expect them to respond with a termination of your SARWATCH.
Example:
SKP53: "Centre, SKYTRANS 53 landed Aurukun, time 38; cancel SARWATCH"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 53, Aurukun SARWATCH terminated, time 38"
Communication with Other Aircraft:
When you are not in communication with the overlying enroute controller, you must announce you intentions on UNICOM (122.800), as well as monitoring and using the local CTAF frequency for traffic in the vicinity.
For more information, see here:
https://vatpac.org/help/tutorials/ctaf-unicom-and-vhf2-monitoring/

The author has been requested to formulate flights following the route of the 2021 Tour de France Bicycle race however the race comprises some 18+ stages which are too many to fly. Rather the author will select a few stages that may comprise other interesting scenery (depending on your simulation program).
This Weeks Flight on 7th July 2021 finds us in France. The plan starts on the small island of Quessant (LFEC) off the coast of Brittany and then onwards to Brest (LFRB) where pilots can complete a T&G if desired after which we fly to the starting point of stage one of the 2021 Tour de France in the city of Brest. The very windy tour ends at Landerneau with a T&G at (LFRJ) if desired with the flight ending at Morlaix (LFRU).
The flight plan is general and does not follow every twist and turn so try and fly it manually.

The author has been requested to formulate flights following the route of the Tour de France Bicycle race however the race comprises some 18+ stages which are too many to fly. Rather the author will select a few stages that may comprise other interesting scenery (depending on your simulation program).
This Weeks Flight on 14th July 2021 includes stage 13 of the Tour de France and will include some scenery highlights depending upon simulator being used.. The plan starts at Nimes (LFTW) and then south to Arles overflying the famous Roman Amphitheatre in the middle of town. The flight will fly back to the city of Nimes to overfly another Roman Amphitheatre and then join the actual starting point for Tour de France on outskirts of Nimes. The flight concludes at Salvaza (LFMK) which is the airport servicing Carcassone a large medieval fortified city. It will be well worth downloading Carcassone scenery for MSFS2020 and X-Plane 11.
The flight plan is general and does not follow every twist and turn so try and fly it manually.
Flight suggested by Dan McKee YMA555
Scenery Suggested:
X-Plane 11 LFMK includes the old city
MSFS2020 The Old City (not the airport)
This file has numerous french airports including LFMK

Updated X-Plane 11 scenery is available for McArthur River and Borroloola in OzXP and for other airports.

This July, we are happy to welcome you to the Festival City for another edition of the ever-popular Panic Stations! It doesn't matter what aircraft you decide to fly, all that matters is that you make it on time to enjoy those all-important bragging rights.
South Australia awaits for this edition of Panic Stations, with the expectation of a fully staffed Adelaide (YPAD) between 0600z-0900z (4pm-7pm AEST). Whether you arrive over the beautiful Flinders Ranges, or by crossing the renowned Eyre Peninsula, we can ensure that Adelaide won't disappoint.

Event Details:
The aim of Panic Stations is a simple one; get as many aircraft flying into the destination as possible with one objective. This being to arrive into Adelaide at or after the arrival time to be in the running for exclusive bragging rights, as well as a special prize!
This time around the touchdown time is: 0800z
(6pm AEST : 5:30pm ACST : 4pm AWST)
We do recommend bringing some extra holding fuel as controllers will be busy trying to accommodate the influx of pilots whilst trying to maintain larger separation standards than usual.

Prizes:
Thanks to the lovely people at Aerosoft, this Panic Stations will have a little bit more up for grabs than usual. They have generously donated three $15 Aerosoft Store Vouchers to be won by two punctual pilots and one lucky controller.
For Pilots: To win one of two awards on offer, you must be one of the aircraft to arrive at or just after the target arrival time. One prize will be given to the first jet aircraft to arrive, with the second going to the first non-jet aircraft to arrive.
For Controllers: Everyone controlling during the event will be entered into a controller matrix and assigned a random number. A random number generator will then be used to determine a winner of the third prize.
This means that you have to be in it to win it!
Our three lucky winners will be immediately contacted by VATPAC5 to redeem their rewards.
The eligibility requirements for receiving these prizes will be released closer to the event date.

Routes:
We recommend using the following routes when arriving into Adelaide from Australia's major cities. These are only a handful of the possible departure points so feel free to depart any airfield you like.

In the words of Monty Python..”and now for something completely different”.
This weeks flight 21st July 2021 takes us on a tour of numerous lighthouses off the south coast of Finland. The flight needs to be flown low albeit at approx. 150kias. There is adequate scenery for both X-Plane and MSFS2020 so please refer to links hereunder.
We depart from Mariehamn (EFMA) on the Finnish autonomous territory on the island of Aland and fly over some lighthouses with a T&G at Hanko (EFHN) on the edge of the mainland. From there we continue past more lighthouses (I know, MFL) to the capital Helsinki where the flight finishes (pun intended) at the main Helsinki GA Airfield of Malmi (EFHF).

Updated X-Plane 11 scenery is available here.

Here you'll find a bit of everything, from fishing, to mining, and even tourism as the region is home to the iconic pink lake at Hutt Lagoon, as well as the idyllic Kalbarri National Park.  With an area extending from Gerladton to Exmouth, there's definitely no shortage of stunning scenery in Gascoyne!
Join us between 0700z and 1000z (5pm-8pm AEST : 3pm-6pm AWST) on August 6th to experience the Gascoyne region for yourself. We aim to have a fully staffed Perth TMA (YPPH), as well as enroute coverage for the entire region. Regardless of aircraft type, we welcome you to the Gascoyne region of Western Australia this August!

      Routes:
The below map highlights some of the most popular routes which can be flown in this region:

Other important airports in the region include: Plutonic (YPLU), Jundee (YJUN), and Dalgaranga Mine (YDGA)
With ATC covering the entire region, pilots are free to fly in whichever direction and between whichever airports they choose. For the more popular airport pairs, we recommend the following routings:
      YPPH - YGEL:
      PH Y15 AVNEX H16 GEL

      Special Procedures:
Gascoyne is home to a whole array of magnificent regional airfields for you to explore.

By far our most popular of all the weekly events, on any given Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with out Spilled Milk Run Monday events held on the last Monday of every month, pilots can expect ATC services as you fly between Melbourne and Sydney, or any destination in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Traffic Levels usually begin to pick up around 0800z and peak between 0900-1030z.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to reserve a position to control during this event are encouraged to apply via https://events.vatpac.org/. After the controller roster is released on Saturday evening, no controllers will be added to the roster. Positions that do not have a nominated controller (i.e. no controller assigned on the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
*Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the rostered positions are filled. Please see a member of the Board of Directors, or a C3 rated controller to be granted permission to open a non-standard position. Please review the controller NOTAM here for detailed information about which Non-Standard Positions are automatically authorized.
