    VATPAC invites you to the next rendition of our newest quarterly event where we explore the Pacific Islands within VATPAC Airspace. On the last Friday of each quarter you can expect to be invited to fly routes across Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia and many other islands in our very own backyard

    This Round
    This quarter we are exploring the beautiful islands of Papua New Guinea. We invite you to fly to, from, and around Port Moresby Jacksons International (AYPY) between 0800z - 1200z on Friday the 24th of June 2022.
    Port Moresby International Airport is the nation's largest and busiest airport; home to Air Niugini and PNG Air, as well as hosting flights from Qantas/QantasLink, Virgin Australia, Philippine Airlines and even Pacific Air Express for cargo just to name a few!

    Routes
    VATPAC recommends the following routes for pilots flying to and from the nominated airfield. 
    YBCS- AYPY:

    Pilots are also welcome to fly to and from other aerodromes, inbound to Port Moresby, throughout the event. 
     
    Controllers:
    Positions during Pacific Connect are NOT rostered. As such, any controllers who wish to control this event are encouraged to log on early to secure their spot! Be sure to float around on the Discord to check when positions become available!
    Non-standard positions may be opened depending on traffic level. Please see a C3 or Senior Staff member for authorization to open them!

    Communications
    Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
    Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

    Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot. Updated X-Plane scenery is available for Horsham in OzXP and for other airports (this includes Quambatook which is not in default X-Plane).

      In collaboration with the Indonesia vACC, VATPAC is delighted to invite you to the Denpasar -> Perth Shuttle! Fly from Denpasar to Perth Airport with full ATC between 0500-1200z on the 20th of August 2022!
      What is a 'Shuttle' Event?
      A shuttle event is where we invite pilots and controllers to fly from the defined departure airport, to the defined arrival airport with the expectation of full ATC along the way! 
      We invite you to depart from Denpasar Airport (WADD) between 0500z-0700z on the 20th of August 2022, bound for Perth Airport (YPPH), as we attempt to test our talented controlling team! Below you will find the recommended route between the two airfields, as well as information for your departure and arrival!
       
      Pilot Information:
      VATPAC and Indonesia vACC recommend the following route when flying between Denpasar and Perth.
      WADD -> YPPH:
      ROUTE: DCT MURAI G578 EGATU L514 REVOP Q38 PH DCT
      DEPARTURE: MURAI 1C (RWY 09) or MURAI 1D (RWY 27)
      ARRIVAL: JULIM 5(A for ILS/RNAV-Z/LOC/VOR; X for RNAV-X approach RWY 03 only; V for visual approach onto RWY 03/RWY 06)
      Remember the departure slot for WADD is between 0500 - 0700z! 
      Departure From Denpasar:
      Pilots departing from Denpasar can expect to depart from either RWY 09 or RWY 27, depending on wind direction and local operating procedures.

      Arrival Into Perth:
      Upon Arrival into Perth Airport, pilots can expect the JULIM 5 STAR followed by a choice of RNAV, VOR, ILS, or VISUAL approach (Weather Permitting) to runways 03/06/21/24. ATC will assign the approach type nominated in the ATIS but you may request a different approach type if you are up for the challenge. 
      We ask that you are familiar with the approach type you select. If you are unfamiliar with these operations you can request vectors from the Approach controller to ensure you capture the localiser.

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
      Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air.
      Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by oceanic ATC.
      All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio", there is no "Melbourne Radio", so ML-IND_FSS is called "Brisbane Radio".
      One of the significant differences between radar and Oceanic flying is the need for position reports. 

      Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are, relying on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
      Current/Previous waypoint name and the time which you crossed that point. Current flight level. Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, flight level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."

      By far our most popular of all the weekly events, on any given Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
      Not to be confused with out Spilled Milk Run Monday events held on the last Monday of every month, pilots can expect ATC services as you fly between Melbourne and Sydney, or any destination in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
      Traffic Levels usually begin to pick up around 0830z and peak between 0930-1100z.

      Controllers:
      Controllers who wish to reserve a position to control during this event are encouraged to apply via https://events.vatpac.org/  After the controller roster is released on Saturday evening, no controllers will be added to the roster. Positions that do not have a nominated controller (i.e. no controller assigned on the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
      *Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the rostered positions are filled.       This Weeks Flight for Wednesday 24th August 2022 continues a four leg trip in Alaska following the route of the famous Iditarod Dog Sled race commencing (March 2022) at Anchorage (PANC) and concludes at Nome. This 2nd leg resumes at Nikolai (PAFS) and will finish at Ruby (PARY). The flight plan provided is a general route linking supply line airfields; the sleds have to go around the higher mountains.
