Be careful to watch for hot air balloons as we explore the Hunter Valley region of NSW for this month's FIFO Friday. Whether you like the big cities or the smaller outback airports, we've got you covered in September. Take in the crisp country air as you explore some of Australia's most infamous wineries and regional towns. Or if that doesn't take your fancy, you can always explore some of the country's best beaches along the coast.
So join us on September 3rd as we try to fully staff up the Hunter Valley region between 0700z-1000z (5pm-8pm AEST : 3pm-6pm AWST). It doesn't matter which plane you want to fly, just hop in and enjoy the scenery. Whether you want to fly between the vibrant towns of Newcastle, Bathurst, and Dubbo, or immerse yourself in the outback, the Hunter Valley region definitely has something for you.
Routes:
The below map highlights some of the routes available in the region:

With ATC aiming to cover the entire region, pilots are free to fly in whichever direction and between whichever airports they choose. For the more popular airport pairs, we recommend the following routings:
Routes from Sydney (YSSY) Routes from Brisbane (YBBN) Routes from Dubbo (YSDU) Routes from Newcastle (YWLM) YWLM: TESAT V140 WLM YSDU: BN H91 HUUGO W169 TW W326 DU YSSY: DU V138 AKMIR W113 TESAT  YSSY: WLM W170 IKIMO PUDUT LOWEP W180 TESAT  YMDG: TESAT H202 MUDGI YORG: BN H91 HUUGO W169 TW W359 MUDGI VIRUR YCBA: DU W785 CBA YSDU: WLM W170 IKIMO PUDUT LOWEP W170 MAKOR W214 RIC W368 KADOM W731 DU YORG: TESAT A576 KADOM W595 VIRUR YWLM: BN H91 SANAD W606 WLM YBKE: DU W540 BKE YBBN: WLM OMBUP W182 NICLA BANDA H185 GOMOL BN YBTH: TESAT A576 KADOM W386 BTH   YWLG: DU W822 AGETA    YSDU: TESAT V295 DU    YWLM: DU W731 KADOM W368 RIC MAKOR W347 MATLA W702 WLM   YPKS: TESAT A576 KADOM W595 PKS       YCBA: TESAT A576 KADOM W595 PKS W440 CBA       Remember that routes not listed here can be found using the VATPAC ATC Assist tool.
Special Procedures:
The Hunter Valley is home to a whole array of magnificent regional airfields for you to explore. Being too small for full control services, OCTA services will be provided by enroute controllers to assist you. Below is a guide to help you with these servies:
Departure:
Taxi Call:
The taxi call informs ATC of your intentions and that you are taxiing at your respective airfield. In response, centre will provide you with a traffic statement and a squawk code.
Example:
SKP71: "Brisbane Centre, IFR Dash 8, SKYTRANS 71 taxies runway 14 at Pormpuraaw for Cairns"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS78, no reported IFR traffic, squawk 4782"
SKP71: "Squawk 4782, SKYTRANS 71"
Departure Call:
Once you have departed, the departure call allows ATC to identify you and to provide you with your airways clearance to your destination.
Example:
SKP71: "Centre, SKYTRANS 71 departure"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 71, centre"
SKP71: "SKYTRANS 71 departed Pormpuraaw at time 49, tracking direct MASHA, passing 4500 for FL190, estimating MASHA at time :02"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 71, cleared to Cairns via MASHA flight planned route, climb FL190"
SKP71: "Cleared to Cairns via MASHA flight planned route, climbing to FL190, SKYTRANS 71"
Arrival:
Descent:
As you approach your destination, the centre controller will advise you that you are cleared to leave controlled airspace on your descent. They will provide you with a clearance, traffic statement, and the local QNH.
Example:
BN-ARA_CTR: SKYRANS 53, leave control area descending, no reported IFR traffic, area QNH 1015"
Termination of SARWATCH:
Once you have arrived at your destination, inform centre that you have landed and expect them to respond with a termination of your SARWATCH.
Example:
SKP53: "Centre, SKYTRANS 53 landed Aurukun, time 38; cancel SARWATCH"
BN-ARA_CTR: "SKYTRANS 53, Aurukun SARWATCH terminated"
Communication with Other Aircraft:
When you are not in communication with the overlying enroute controller, you must announce you intentions on UNICOM (122.800), as well as monitoring and using the local CTAF frequency for traffic in the vicinity.

This Weeks Flight on 20th October 2021 at 8.30pm AEDT is a flight in Alaska from Unalakleet (PAUN) to Nome (PAOM). Some may be familiar with a TV series “Flying Wild Alaska” which was shown on Discovery Channel nearly ten years ago and featured the Tweto family who used to operate out of Unalakleet. We will be doing some T&G's at fields that were serviced by Era Alaska.
If simulation allows try winter conditions.
Flight suggested by Dan McKee YMA555
Scenery Suggested: Due to the plethora of flight sim programs now in use scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot. However the author uses MSFS2020 for these flights and provides links to MSFS scenery hereunder. Most addon airfields are quite small downloads. Also all scenery so far that has not been verified for updates do work fine in latest update.
Unalakleet PAUN         this will be required as the field is not currently in MSFS2020
Shaktoolit PFSH          this will be required as the field is not currently in MSFS2020
      Koyuk PAKK
      Golovin PAGL
Aircraft Suggested: Capable of 150 kias
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC

Weather: Real time weather, fair weather if conditions are not suitable.

Simulation Date/Time: Current date set to daylight.
Weather: Real World / Fair weather if real world is unsuitable for VFR operations.
If not using live weather, please be mindful of others who are using live weather and will be taking off and landing into the wind.
      Distance: 122 nm
Est Flight Time: approx 75 min
Aircraft: Any "low and slow" aircraft capable of 100 kias.
Altitude: Not above FL125 Swan Hill to Echuca, not above 8500 ft Echuca to Bendigo. Suggested 2000 ft.

GPS flight plan is available for FSX/P3D .pln, MFS2020 .pln, X-Plane .fms and Little Navmap.
Navigation: Pilots are encouraged to navigate visually. For those less familiar the GPS flight plan is the recommended method of navigation.
      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot. Updated X-Plane 11 scenery is available here.

You know it’s the end of the month when Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you to Melbourne and Christchurch! Join us as we unite with our New Zealand friends and cross between the Tasman!
Fly between Melbourne (YMML) and Christchurch (NZCH) with the expectation of full ATC services throughout your flight!
To accommodate for the time zone differences between Australia and New Zealand, this weeks Spilled Milk Run Monday has been moved between 0630-1030z.

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air.
Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio".
One of the significant differences between radar and Oceanic flying is the need for position reports.

Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time which you crossed that point. Current flight level. Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, flight level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
      Find more information here.

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Melbourne and Christchurch.
YMML – NZCH: ML Y260 ECKHO L508 KABIN
NZCH – YMML: KABIN L508 MILLA P753 WAREN W687 ML

Christchurch Departure and Approach Charts can be found here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to reserve a position to control during this event are encouraged to apply via https://events.vatpac.org/. After the controller roster is released on Saturday evening. Positions that do not have a nominated controller (i.e. no controller assigned on the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
*Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. Please review the 'Activation of Non-Standard Positions' NOTAM for information regarding the activation of approved non-standard positions.
